Everything I've ever read with Adam Jones (I'm a guitar player, he gets guitar articles a lot) he regards it as a metal band. They are a metal band. Plain and simple. They aren't rock, they aren't prog, they are left in the shoe horn of 90s metal. Their last album was pretty much "Tool covers Meshuggah". The album before that was "Tool rips off King Crimson".

Besides, I think all that hawthorne heights you listen to has probably skewed your view of what's metal.
