Not true. In china karaoke is huge. And it seems it is pretty big in Korea too. Seems like an Asian country thing.

Otb Asians love karaoke it seems. Same goes for the japanophiles we have roaming around NYC. Those are … interesting. My Chinese friend who has lives in the states for a fairly long time and is americanized as it would seem isn't very interested in karaoke. It was huge in china while I was there. And is super popular with most Asians in NYC.
